BSL Level 1 qualification structure

This qualification is made up of three units. While each unit can be taken individually, we recommend starting with BSL101, as it provides the foundation for BSL102 and BSL103. Following this order helps you build confidence and progress naturally into more advanced topics.

Code Unit Title Description
BSL101 Introduction to BSL Covers the basics of British Sign Language, including fingerspelling, key vocabulary, and simple everyday exchanges.
BSL102 Conversational BSL Develops conversational skills, helping learners take part in simple discussions and everyday interactions.
BSL103 Communication in BSL about Everyday Life Builds on earlier units to cover a wider range of real-life situations, topics, and vocabulary.

The course also includes guided learning and additional study time, giving you the opportunity to practise and reinforce your skills outside of the classroom.

Why learn BSL

Learning British Sign Language (BSL) opens up meaningful communication with the Deaf community, fostering deeper connections and mutual understanding. It enables both hearing and Deaf individuals to participate more fully in society, reducing barriers and promoting inclusivity. By acquiring BSL skills, you actively contribute to a more accessible world where everyone can share ideas, build relationships, and feel valued.

Providing access to Deaf people in society is essential for creating a fair and equal environment for all. When services, workplaces, and educational settings are accessible in BSL, Deaf individuals can engage confidently and independently. This inclusion not only benefits the Deaf community but enriches society as a whole by embracing diversity and encouraging empathy and collaboration among all members.
